Dusty Spikes Running Club
Yesterday, we had our 2nd Dusty Spikes Running Club group run. This running club meets Saturdays, usually around 11:30 am but as late as 2 pm for a 30-40 minute run starting at the Key Bridge. We start off slow, very slow in fact and gradually pick it up until we're close to what might be considered a moderate pace. Afterwards we go to FireWorks for pizza, sangria, and beer. The Dusty Spikes Running Club (DSRC) is pretty much just Jesse and I now but we're hoping Ben Cooke will join us soon to bring our membership numbers up. I also think there's a good chance I'll talk Will Short into joining us afterwards at Fireworks but very unlikely he'd join us for the actual run. If we still only have 2-3 members at this time next year I wouldn't consider it a failure. A failure implies we didn't meet our goals. We don't have goals or a "strategy" at this point. We're simply enjoying the fact that we're able to run 30 minutes without injury and awarding ourselves afterwards.

Congratulations on the DSRC. Any plans to create a Philly chapter?
ReplyDeleteWe haven't created anything that would be considered a plan yet but I do think Philly would be a good market for an expansion club.
ReplyDeleteWhat type of shoe are you guys running in?
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm alternating between Nike Frees and Asics Gel Nimbus 12s. I've been injury free for almost a year now, which quite frankly is un-fucking-believable. During this time I've only been running in the Asics Nimbus. Good, cushioned shoe that seems durable. I read Born to Run. Ginormous fan. Totally drank the kool aid but continue to be a major pussy when it comes to running barefoot. I'm trying to transition slowly so i bought a pair of Nike Frees. I love them. Walk around in them and have been running in them for two weeks. So far my calves have not exploded and my achilles/plantar fascias have not ruptured.
ReplyDeleteI'd recommend both shoes for use.
I'm alternating New Balance Minimus and Asics Gel Nimbus 12s. I also read Born to Run and consumed kool aid but am reluctant to go too extreme since it took months for me to battle my way into running club shape so I don't want to risk injury.
ReplyDeleteI run in Mizuno Wave Precisions. They are a pretty good lightweight trainer. I also go barefoot for about half my runs. But it's pretty boring. I don't venture away from the soccer fields at my YMCA. So to run barefoot, I end up just running laps around the field anywhere from 12 to 20 times. Most hazardous part is that I tend to run when some guys are practicing lacrosse drills. I'm more scared of a lacrosse ball at 100 mph than I am of stepping on something.
