I started my 5th season of Dusty Spikes running on July 4th with a 4 miler in a park near my place. I decided to enter the race at 11:30 the night before and used it more of a tempo run. These days, a tempo run is 7-7:20 min mile pace. Last night, I ran the Firefly 5k which I took a little more seriously but only managed a 20:24.
I'm strongly considering re-retiring from racing at the end of this Fall. In the meantime, I'm consistently running 12-15 miles a week with an occasional hard mile as a workout. Before I give-up on the mythical 18 minute barrier, I'd like to come down from the mountains and run a race closer to sea level. Anyone else up for a sea-level 5k this Fall? Suggestions welcome.

Hey Jason,
ReplyDeleteI don't really know of any fast 5ks that would be worth a trip to Richmond. But I do think you need to give it a go from sea level.
I ran a 10K a few months ago. I went out at about 6:15 pace, and paid for it. Let's just say I averaged 7 minute pace, but let's not get into the details.
I just registered for a trail half marathon in September with just the goal of finishing. Since I haven't run over an hour in a long time, that is probably the appropriate goal. I've got some training to do.

That sounds painful! Did you get your race strategy from CJ? I don't think I would have survived my 4 miler if I would have gone out in 6:15 so congrats. The trail half-marathon sounds awesome. I'd love to do a long distance trail race sometime but I seem to get injured when I attempt to run more than 15-20 miles a week. 5 miles has been my max this year. Good luck on the half and please report back.
