I've been back running about 30 mi/wk since last november. It was HORRENDOUS starting out, but 20lbs later it is much better. Also, I may have discovered a cure for my injury problems. I threw out all my orthotics/inserts and have run everything since march in flats. Calves were sore as hell at the start but after about six weeks everything calmed down and no shin/achilles/p.f. problems at all. Weird.

Somehow I don't see Runner's World endorsing the flats only training regimen. Safe to say the podiatrists will be angry as well. I was reading a review today for Born to Run which supports this approach.
ReplyDeleteI should clarify that it was a review for Born to Run the book not the Bruce Springsteen album.
ReplyDeleteYou threw out your orthotics and have had no problems? I'm afraid to do that, you are a brave man.
ReplyDeleteJesus man...that is a bold move. My calves would have exploded. Born to Run? What is that? Bill Lynch's autobiography?
ReplyDeleteMy shins were hurting in the same old spots after just a few weeks back running and my achilles got to be like it was on fire, so at some point it became either quit again or try something desperate.

It's a little new age-y but I figured there was some sense to it, and minimal flats seemed a good compromise.
I'm sold. Sure beats surgery although I can't picture my selfish running down the sidewalks of Arlington in a pair of leather mocs.
