Reset

Ok, I wanted to reset this blog to what I thought it was supposed to be about. It's starting to feel like a Facebook page for graduates of a 2nd rate diploma mill in the Shenandoah Valley.

So here I go... I am slow and I am soft. I kind of thought it was true, but it really hit home this past week. Sure, I had an idea when I was at the beach this past summer. There are two distinct sets of pictures in that vacation photo album. The first set I am playing with my daughters on the beach. The second set, taken after I saw the first set, I am playing with my daughters on the beach with my shirt on.

Funny enough, I haven't really gained weight. I've just gotten soft.

So that was bad, but last week I ran three miles slowly one day and I was sore the next day. Later in the week, I basically jogged four miles and had to take a nap that afternoon. Granted, I'm on a super-stressful project at work. Maybe that excuses some of it. However, I used to work in a factory in the summers while running 70-80 miles a week. How the hell did I do that?

So how are people out there dealing with their struggles? I think I need a goal. Is there a race or event anyone is shooting for? If so, is it far enough into the future that we could get ready for it? I'd be interested in teaming up for something.

  1. 4 miles and a nap. Unfortunately, I can totally relate to that. As far as goals, I'm currently my company's #3 runner and I have a goal of overtaking that #2 18:53 5k runner. After a few beers I'll think I can take on the 18 min barrier

  2. What would really motivate me is the opportunity to team up with all you fat asses one more time for an Alumni Race. Hood to Coast Relay? Anyone? Maybe we can race the overweight/out of shape William and Mary Alumni. Afterwards, we'll celebrate with a keg of Red Dog.

  3. I have been MIA for awhile. It happens these days when I travel. I have done two runs this week one five miler last Sunday and then a 6 mile run yesterday. Both of which resulted in sore left knee and extremely sore right IT band.

I unlike Chis have gained weight. I started JMU at 145, I am probably 175. he weight is tough and I have gotten soft and heavy.

I will have to take a few days off....quite frustrating. So far from former days.

I did run the 6 miles lat night between 7 min and 7:30. Not terrible.

  4. 6 miles at 7min pace - Holy fucking shit Ben!

I'm with Chris, we should pick a race and do it. Anything in the DC area? I would love to do one of those adventure races where you canoe and shit. Pat would not want to do that though, "it would be too much fun!"

Chris do you still lift weights? Does anybody? I go about 3 times a week and follow the same plan the guy with the bandana laid out for us at JMU.

  5. I'd be up for something like Hood to Coast. It's far enough out in time that I think I could get in passable shape for it. This looks interesting and is closer to home http://www.blueridgerelay.com/

  6. I'm up for Hood to Coast or Blue Ridge. Some guy got murdered at this years Blue Ridge Relay or had a heart attack or something I think. He turned up dead in some small town garage along the way and they are still investigating.
CJ--you are correct I will not participate in anything called an "adventure race."
As to getting soft, I started out running again because I wound up somewhere north of 190 and heard myself groaning at times under my breath when I went to sit down or stand up. That felt pretty ridiculous.

  7. There's another relay in Md that is similar to the other two called Ragner Relay:

I'm up for any of them.
